Career Academy studentsKristina, Amy, and Joel, students at the CYD Career Academy

The CYD Career Academy at CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College is a postsecondary workforce development program that provides young adults ages 16–24 a free pathway into NYC healthcare employment. Students participate in occupational training and paid internships with NYC healthcare providers, earning certifications in Central Sterile Processing, Phlebotomy & EKG, or Medical Billing & Coding.

During the five-week career readiness Bridge, students attend classes designed to equip them with the soft skills, medical terminology, financial literacy, and customer service training required for success in the healthcare field.

The current cohort of Central Sterile Processing students, who are working toward certifications in sterilizing surgical instruments, have especially enjoyed the work readiness class taught by Job Developer Gretchen Simmons. Joel, a student from the Bronx, found that the class “prepares you for writing resumes, cover letters, and just everything that you would need.”

For many students, these workshops are the first time they have had the opportunity to practice job interviews. “I was really nervous about interviews, but the Bridge has been great for that,” said Amy, a student from Brooklyn who learned about the program through her godmother, a social worker. “Gretchen helps us with our elevator pitch and she asks us interview questions. It prepares us for when we’re out in the real world.”

Beyond job preparation, the Bridge helps students develop skills they can use in their everyday lives. Kristina, a York College graduate, found the financial literacy class taught by Outreach & Retention Specialist Jordan Alexander invaluable. “I was kind of lost when it came to taxes and how to take care of your money,” admitted Kristina, “but financial literacy really helps you get a step ahead.”

Now, Kristina is eager to move beyond the classroom and begin hands-on occupational training. “I’m looking forward to finally getting into the work and instruments, the labs, the chemicals, and everything. I’m so ready!”

The Career Academy can be the first step in a healthcare career. Joel ultimately wants to become a nurse. “I am hoping to get my provisional license and an interview or a job.” Amy said, “I’m going to use this as a stepping stone to get into a hospital and further my education. I just want to keep elevating and growing.”

When it comes to their futures, these students are ready to get to work.
