A Lifeline for Immigrant Students

Briana Carp speaking with a student

CYD’s Legal Information Clinic (LIC), located on-site at Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day High School (MCNDHS), is one of our most distinctive resources. CYD founded the LIC in 2009 with support from the Morton K. and Jane Blaustein Foundation. Our students’ need for the LIC continues to rise. Last year, it served 375 young people, nearly half of MCNDHS’s student body. Many of these students come from hot spots around the globe, from Ecuador to Senegal.

Briana Carp, the LIC director, provides free, reliable information on current immigration policies in many languages, educates students on their rights, and, crucially, connects them and their families with pro bono attorneys. Carp shepherds students through cases of all kinds, including some that must be resolved urgently to keep them safe in the U.S. Other cases have moved particularly slowly since the pandemic when the courts were closed. Currently, MCNDHS and CYD are collaborating to connect with the thousands of asylum seekers who have come to the city since April. We look forward to welcoming them after the new year.

Your dollars make a difference!

Without the support of each and every one of our individual donors, the stories you read about and the programs that make an impact in the lives of our young people would not be possible. Thank you!
