From the Executive Director: Forging Paths to Success

Executive Director Michael Roberts speaking with student

I’d like to welcome you all back with us to the 2022-23 school year. The beginning of a new school year always brings excitement and a sense of possibility. The day before school started, CYD staff gathered to discuss priorities for the months ahead. One thing we will be focusing on is the message we emphasize in our tagline: forging paths to success for our students. Our community of young adults, CBO staff, and DOE educators is re-examining what successful outcomes look like for life after high school. Our goal is to expand options and accessibility for our students to connect to learning pathways, whether they include college, certification, civil service, or employment.

Preparation, options, and equity – these words will guide CYD’s work in a new year of building better futures for our students.

Equity is part of CYD’s DNA, and is at the very top of our current agenda. When school was remote, we learned quickly that many of our students lacked basic computer literacy. We are trying to close that gap and are seeking funding to provide this training inside our schools. Right now, JobsFirstNYC estimates that 1 out of every 4 young people aged 18-24 is out of school and out of work. Young people of color and immigrants, who make up most of the population we serve, already face discrimination in hiring. Earning certification in specific skills can give our students an edge in employment. CYD is seeking funding to pilot micro-credentialing classes in technology and other skills that can help young people attach to better-paying jobs after graduation.

I hope you will join us in supporting expanding options, access, and success for all our students.
