We asked nine students what they are most looking forward to this summer. Their answers ranged from unwinding to traveling to going back to school.
CYD is incredibly proud of the over 750 students from our three partner schools who prevailed through the pandemic shutdown and graduated on June 25, 2021. We are rooting for them as they begin their college careers, pursue job training, or enter the workforce.
As the school year comes to an end, CYD college and career advisors are there to help seniors finalize their plans for life after high school, whether that’s for college, job training, or employment. Our goal is for all graduates to leave with a workable, thoughtful postsecondary plan.
Congratulations to four Dreamers from HPHS who have been awarded TheDream.US Scholarships! Each of these students will receive $37,000 towards their next four years of college, allowing them to pursue higher education regardless of financial challenges.
Lesly Sanchez initially struggled to fit in after she moved to the US. After getting introduced to CYD, everything changed. She is now enrolled in graduate program with Hunter College for advance bilingual certification, and she hopes to pursue a career in teaching and law so that she can help better the lives of other immigrants like herself.
Virtual movie nights, tours of the White House, and basketball drafts are just some of the creative avenues that CYD advisors have developed to help build relationships with students they may never have met in person. “A fun event opens the door,” says Sebastian Munn. “Then we begin to talk about college and career plans.”
30 young women from Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day School are being guided through the national award-winning “Real As Me” Girls’ Empowerment curriculum, which uses a story based approach to the provide a structure and a safe space for young women to find their voices and build confidence and skills. Groups meet once a week to delve into discussions about topics such as sexuality and identity, and navigating difficult home lives and body issues.
Briana Carp has been CYD’s Director of Legal Information since 2010. Located onsite at Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day High School, CYD’s Legal Information Clinic provides legal information and referrals to CYD students, focusing on immigration issues.
