Student’s Work Featured at American Museum of Natural History

MCNDHS student Vova posing with display at Natural History Museum

MCNDHS student Vova is an artist carrying on a cultural tradition of tusk carving. He is a member of the Nenets people, an ethnic minority native to Siberia, who have a long tradition of finding mammoth tusks on the tundra and carving them. Vova learned how to do this from his parents, and he is currently featured in the American Museum of Natural History’s exhibition “The Secret World of Elephants,” on view through late 2024. Living in New York, he still finds time to sketch carving ideas inspired by Nenets folklore.

At the same time, with the help of CYD advisors, he’s working on his college applications. Vova, who came to New York and MCNDHS last year, wants to build a career in nursing, veterinary medicine, or dentistry – which, as he points out, uses tools similar to those of a tusk carver.
