A graduate of the CYD Career Academy, Michelle is tutoring students there while studying for her RN degree and working in a cardiologist’s office as a certified MA. Making her daughter proud was a goal that inspired her to break new ground in her family.

After graduating from the CYD Career Academy and working for four years as a certified Medical Assistant, Michelle returned to the Academy as a tutor in her favorite course there, Anatomy & Physiology. “I’m obsessed with science!” she says. “And CYD’s Bridge training was so important to me. It helped with communications and gave us practice in how to write professional emails, follow telephone etiquette, dress professionally, prepare for interviews, present yourself. You have to know how to talk to patients before you touch them.”

Michelle was a teen mom. When in foster care with her baby, she decided to change her life to make her daughter proud and give her a better future. So she became the first person in her family to graduate from high school. From there, she went to the CYD Career Academy, and was hired during her clinical internship for the practice she worked in, a cardiologist’s office. Cardiology is Michelle’s favorite branch of medicine, and she hopes to make a career in the field as a Nurse Practitioner, doctor, or cardiac surgeon.

As a tutor at the Academy, Michelle says, “My students sound just like me! When they get discouraged, I can relate. It can happen. What matters is how can we get past it, how can we keep our eyes on the prize? I’ve been through so many things that could have made me angry or bitter, and I’m the polar opposite. I try to teach both my students and my own children that you get out what you put in. This applies to everything in life.”
